The Sisters of Compassion
|
A Deaconess, according to the founding primate and patriarch of the
African Orthodox Church, His Eminence George Alexander McGuire,
is a servant of God and God’s Church.
The Sisters of Compassion Holy Order of Saint John the Divine
Sound Baptist is an order of deaconesses of the African Orthodox
Church, (A.O.C.) jurisdiction of the West. This order was formalized
through the consecration of the first deaconesses in 1982 by His
Eminence G. Duncan Hinkson, M.D., D.D.
At that time, nine sisters including the youngest deaconess in the
history of the A.O.C. publicly proclaimed vows of compassion, non-
possession, charity, and obedience, offering themselves wholly unto
the Lord and His service.
We follow in the ancient tradition of the early Church deaconesses,
who in 1923 in New York began ministering to the needy.
The Sisters feed those who are hungry, clothe the naked, take in the
homeless, and care for and educate the youth.
Compassion is sympathy to others' distress and suffering, with the
desire and the ability to help. This embodies the very essence of
Christ, his teaching, and example. Compassion is also the English
translation of our patron saint’s Sanskrit name: Ohnedaruth.
Whatever vocation a Sister has chosen her vows are fulfilled to the
needs of a suffering world by visiting the sick, praying with the dying,
caring for the orphaned, seeking out the wandering, comforting the
sorrowful and leading the sinner to their savior.
